Step Up to Mosaic Art

March 15, 2021

Guests of Lafayette Park are often surprised to learn that some of the most beautiful places in San Francisco can be found right beneath their feet. The city is home to an array of beautifully tiled steps created by various artists and community organizations.

As the perfect way to enjoy a fresh bay breeze and recreate safely outside, take a walk to one of these colorful stairways and see the stunning mosaic works for yourself.

16th Avenue Tiled Steps
From the sea to the stars—that was the inspiration for this joint neighborhood venture. Using handmade tiles created by artists Aileen Barr and Colette Crutcher, the final project culminated in a 163-step tiled stairway in Golden Gate Heights.

Hidden Garden Steps
One of 14 San Francisco projects to win a Neighborhood Empowerment Award, the Hidden Garden Steps was a true labor of love for artists Aileen Barr and Colette Crutcher, who not only came up with the design but created 148 risers.

Lincoln Park Steps
52 steps make up this beautiful Beaux-Arts-inspired display, conceived by Friends of Lincoln Park founders Meg Autry and Anna Yatroussis. The seven-year project gave new life to an iconic staircase suffering from decades of neglect and decay.

Flights of Fancy
Located in the city’s Bayview-Hunters Point District, the tiled steps on Arelious Walker Drive connect Northridge Road to Innes Avenue. The four-foot-wide staircase is made up of 87 mosaic tiles inspired by Native American pottery and Middle Eastern tile.
