San Francisco’s De Young Museum and Legion of Honor

August 02, 2023

A visit to the de Young Museum and Legion of Honor is an unforgettable San Francisco experience. Both museums are known for their impressive collections of art and architecture, as well as their stunning locations in Golden Gate Park and Lincoln Park. Take advantage of Lafayette’s close proximity to the city by making a day trip by car or easily hopping on the BART.

The de Young Museum, designed by Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron, features a glistening copper façade and houses an extensive collection of American art from the 17th to the 21st century, as well as art from Africa, Oceania, and the Americas. Textiles, costumes, and contemporary art installations add to its diverse offerings.
A highlight of the de Young Museum is the Hamon Observation Tower, which offers panoramic views of San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge. The tower is free to visitors, and it's a must-visit for anyone who wants to see the city from above.

In Lincoln Park, the Legion of Honor stands as a stunning neoclassical building housing a remarkable European art collection, including works by Rembrandt, Monet, and Rodin. The museum is known for its impressive collection of ancient Mediterranean art and artifacts, as well as its beautiful gardens and sculptures. One of the most famous works at the Legion of Honor is Auguste Rodin's "The Thinker" which welcomes visitors at the entrance. The sculpture is a must-see for any art lover, and a perfect photo opportunity.
