California Shakespeare Theater: Timeless Classics with a Contemporary Twist

May 09, 2018

For forty-five years, the California Shakespeare Theater has shown the world the enduring cultural and political relevance of the classics of the stage. This summer that tradition continues amid the bucolic splendor of the Siesta Valley with Cal Shakes’ unique spin on an outstanding literary lineup. From June 13 through July 1, Octavio Solis’s Quixote Nuevo reimagines Cervantes’ tale of the Man of La Mancha with an overactive imagination by relocating the chivalrous Don Quixote from 16th-century Spain to a 21st-century Texas border town. From July 18 through August 5, an ensemble of actors (whose roles are randomly assigned just prior to each performance) face the ultimate end in Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’ Everybody, with each performer trying to take something different with them into the great beyond. From August 23 through September 9, The War of the Roses combines portions of Shakespeare’s Henry VI and Richard III as two mighty noble families clash in pursuit of the throne. And from September 25 through October 7, Marcus Gardley’s hugely popular Black Odyssey returns with the story of a return by tempest-tossed Gulf War veteran Ulysses Lincoln. This is some seriously good theater, and at just 15 minutes by car from the Lafayette Park Hotel, it’s seriously convenient too.
