Fort Point: Civil War Soldiers and Silver Screen Icons

June 04, 2018

As a guest of the Lafayette Park Hotel, you have access to the best of two worlds: a bucolic European style retreat that’s just a stone’s throw from the thriving metropolis of San Francisco. To get to the City by the Bay, enjoy the scenic half-hour’s drive by car, or just hop on the BART and let Bay Area transit do the driving for you. One of our favorite sights in the city combines American Civil War and classic film history. Tucked beneath the southern end of the Golden Gate Bridge, Fort Point was once the location of a Spanish fortress. During the US Civil War, Union forces erected the current fortification, which now serves as a museum offering you a fascinating look into daily habits of American soldiers in the mid-19th century. In addition, Fort Point is also the site of the famous scene from Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo in which Madeline Elster (Kim Novak) attempts to leap to her death in San Francisco Bay, shocking private detective Scottie Ferguson (Jimmy Stewart), who promptly dives in to save her.
